Nick Moss Band – Shade Tree – at BB’s Lawnside BBQ of Kansas City

Nick Moss Band – Shade Tree – at BB’s Lawnside BBQ of Kansas City

My best friend called me 1/2 hour before The Nick Moss Band was to perform at BB’s Lawnside BBQ, home of walking blues history, Mr. Lindsay Shannon. Neither of us had heard of them so I pulled up Spotify to give them a quick listen. I pulled up their latest live CD, Live and Luscious and after getting a quick taste, told my good friend Sam that we’ve gotta go. While we missed the first 1/2 hour of the show, what we did see and hear had everyone movin’ and groovin’ all night long.

(from their site)
They are from Chicago. Nick Moss is a 16-time Blues Music Award nominee and is one of the top draws on the blues circuit and one of the most exciting, dynamic performers working today.

Michael Ledbetter, a distant relative of Lead Belly, was asked to join Nick Moss’ cast of young up-and-comers in May 2011. In his short time with Nick, he has had the pleasure of singing for and backing some of the best in Blues music and has made his mark in Blues as both a remarkable vocalist as well as a great guitarist – a vital addition to the new NMB.

So far, in his short tenure in the band, Patrick Seals has gained the respect of many of his drumming colleagues in the blues community. Most notably, Tony Braunagle (Robert Cray Band, Phantom Blues Band), who asked Patrick to participate in his drum clinic on the 2012 Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise.

Nick Fane’s bass playing has been heavily influenced by some of the all-time greats of the instrument, such as Geddy Lee of Rush, John Entwiste of The Who, Motown legend James Jamerson and the great Jaco Pastorius.

Taylor Streiff was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. In 2008, Taylor moved to Chicago, IL to study at Columbia College Chicago. While at Columbia, Taylor was an in demand keyboard player for student ensembles. He also met and performed in multiple settings with current NMB bass player Nick Fane, and shared the stage with artists Ivan Neville, Kevin Eubanks, Charlie Sexton, Paula Cole, and Joan Osborne. Taylor graduated from Columbia in 2013, with a degree in Contemporary, Urban, and Popular Music.

This song had a hint of Allman Brothers with the duo of Nick Moss and Michael Ledbetter on guitar. The other band mates had their chance to show their stuff as well.

For more about The Nick Moss Band, go to http://ift.tt/2sfsvNn
Check out their latest live CD, Live and Luscious, as well as their double CD, From The Root To The Fruit. Support the music you love and see them live!

Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra – Rumba Negro (1929)

Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra was the most sucessful Jazz band of the Midwest. The band toured all over the country and had a top selling recording in 1927 for Victor named “South”. In 1929 Count Basie of The Blue Devils joined the band, and several other members of that band soon joined Moten’s Orchestra. Count Basie took over the band after Moten’s death in 1935.

Kansas City Man Blues – Stumptown Jazz 2001

Kansas City Man Blues – Stumptown Jazz 2001

Kansas City Man Blues – Stumptown Jazz 2001

This blues was probably the first recording by the great Sidney Bechet with the Clarence Williams Blue Five in New York on July 30th 1923. If interested listen to it at http://ift.tt/2s2FX6y
I’ve always been interested in this tune and I’m glad I could introduce it to Stumptown Jazz shortly after I joined them in 1997.
We were taped while performing at a Milwaukee Jazz Society jazz concert in January 2001. We had grown to play it in a somewhat faster tempo. By just listening to the original recording again made me think that somewhere the beauty laid in this marvelous slow tempo. Next time we play it again, I’ll step it in ( that’s what we call that) at that slow speed. Who knows.
The band plays still once in a while together. Next time is at the Milwaukie Club again on May 10th 2007
In the band are Bob Erwig cornet, Phil Hatton clarinet, Rex Rice trombone, leader Gary Peterson piano, Dave Brown banjo, John Walling tuba and Bill Franklin drums.

Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra – Mary Lee ((1929)

Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra – Mary Lee ((1929)

Bennie Moten (Nov.13,1894 – April 2,1935) was a noted American jazz pianist and band leader born in Kansas City, Missouri.

He led the Kansas City Orchestra, the most important of the itinerant, blues-based orchestras active in the Midwest in the 1920s, and helped to develop the riffing style that would come to define many of the 1930s Big Bands.

His first recordings were made in 1923, and were rather stiff interpretations of the New Orleans style of King Oliver and others. They also showed the influence of the Ragtime that was still popular in the area.

They next recorded in 1926 for Victor Records in New Jersey, and were influenced by the more sophisticate style of Fletcher Henderson.

By 1928 Moten’s piano was showing some Boogie Woogie influences, but the real revolution came in 1929 when he recruited Count Basie, Walter Page and Oran ‘Hot Lips’ Page. Walter Page’s walking bass lines gave the music an entirely new feel compared to the 2/4 tuba of his predecessor Vernon Page, coloured by Basie’s understated, syncopated piano fills.

The 10 legendary December 13,1932 recordings, made when the band were barely staving off literal starvation, show the Basie sound in embryo, four years before Basie recorded under his own name – in fact Moten does not even play on these sessions. By this time Ben Webster and Jimmy Rushing had also joined.

After Moten’s death in 1935 after an unsuccessful tonsillectomy, Basie took many of the leading musicians from the band to form his own orchestra.

2014 Inductee – GLOW from Kansas City, MO

2014 Inductee – GLOW from Kansas City, MO

GLOW (Kansas City)
Formed in 1977 by John Kessler, (keys and vocals), and Philip Lincoln Smith, (drums and vocals), Glow, (originally named Checkmate), created a powerful blend of original Progressive Rock, Jazz Fusion and Pop Music. Guitarist Brian Milam joined in 1978, and propelled the band into the public consciousness with his incendiary chops. Bassist Paul Davis joined in 1981. All of the members contributed to the band’s compositions, but it was the song craft and compositional daring of Kessler and Milam that proved most successful. Various other great musicians were part of Glow, but the four-piece group of Kessler, Milam, Smith and Davis is remembered as a “musician’s band”; uncompromising, fearless, and unique. Glows took first place in the KY-102 “Best of Home Tape” competition in 1983, and were finalists in the Miller High Life “Rock-to-Riches” contest, and were also on KKCI’s “Moonshine II” LP. Their original music attracted the organizers of the 1984 Monteux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and that summer, Glow performed in front of enthusiastic audiences on two of the festival’s stages.

Moten Stomp – Benny Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra (Victor Scroll)1927

Moten Stomp – Benny Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra (Victor Scroll)1927

A Red Hot Jazz song recorded June 12, 1927. Pianist and bandleader, Bennie Moten helped to establish what is called the Kansas City Jazz style. In 1922 he formed the B. B. & D. Trio (Beenie, Bailey and Dude, although they were popularly referred to as Big, Black and Dirty) and made his recording debut in 1923, when his band accompanied Blues singer Ada Brown on the song “Evil Mama Blues”. In 1926, Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra began recording for Victor. Moten had several bands touring under his name in the 1920s. Moten started “raiding” another Kansas City band, The Blue Devils for musicians. Count Basie left the Blue Devils in 1929 and was followed by Jimmy Rushing, Hot Lips Page, Eddie Durham and Ben Webster, thus forming the nucleus of the future Count Basie Orchestra. When Moten died in 1935 from a botched tonsillectomy, Basie took over the band. Under his leadership the band emerged as one of the greatest of all Jazz bands.

Kansas City Stomps – Jelly Roll Morton and his Red Hot Peppers

Kansas City Stomps – Jelly Roll Morton and his Red Hot Peppers

One of Jelly’s traditional numbers played in the New Orleans style, according to Jelly it was nothing to do with Kansas City but named after the Kansas City Saloon in Tijuana Mexico. This band was well rehearsed and disciplined, Jelly was a disciplinarian and would take a whole day to record one tune in those days, however, the musicians were allowed the freedom to express their own personalities, – (as long as they played what Jelly told them to play!) Recorded in Chicago in 1926 this music was ahead of its time. The band included Baby Dodds, dms, Omer Simeon clt.

Kansas City PGSoR House Band – Janis Joplin – Piece of My Heart – Woodstock show

Kansas City PGSoR House Band – Janis Joplin – Piece of My Heart – Woodstock show

Get the DVD of the whole show here: http://ift.tt/2ppAb1P

OK, technically it’s by “Big Brother & The Holding Company” but if you labeled it that way, nobody would find it.

From the Paul Green School of Rock Woodstock tribute concert series. The Kansas City House Band concert was at Knuckleheads Saloon in the east bottoms. Like the original Woodstock, it rained. But that didn’t seem to dampen the crowd’s enthusiasm.

I shot the whole show with 2 cameras, and got a copy of the camera footage shot by one of the parents. Most of the close-ups are with my Canon XH-A1, the wide shot was with a Canon HV-20, and I’m not sure what the 3rd camera was. I’ve got a full DVD made, and will be getting a copy to the head of the school.

Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra, James Rushing vocal – Won’t You Be My Baby (1930)

Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra, James Rushing vocal – Won’t You Be My Baby (1930)

Kansas City Chiefs 2016 Pump Up ᴴᴰ

Kansas City Chiefs 2016 Pump Up ᴴᴰ

This is probably the most pumped up I have been ever for Chiefs football. All the pieces are there, not to mention that Peyton left…lol. Smith, Charles, Ware, West, Maclin, Conley, Streater, Kelce, and Wilson are all very well rounded players and will be key for this team. Finally, the offensive line looks competent. Fisher, Ehinger, Morse, LDt, and Schwartz could shock people and turn into a top 10 offensive line. The defensive line was easily top 10 last year and dded Chris Jones. Not to mention that Rakeem Nunez Roches has improved. I’m finally excited at inside linebacker. Dj, March, Wilson, Mauga, and Alexander form a very respectable core. The only place I’m really worried is at OLB. This team revolves around Houston. I like the young corners, especially Peters, Nelson, Gaines, DJ White, and Cooper. Safety is an interesting spot with Berry, Sorensen, Parker, Murray, etc. It’s gonna be a fun year.

The Book of Mormon in Kansas City – TV Commercial

The Book of Mormon in Kansas City – TV Commercial

THE BOOK OF MORMON is coming to the Music Hall in Kansas City. Get tickets and more info: http://ift.tt/2px1ZO1

The New York Times calls it “the best musical of the century.” The Washington Post says, “It is the kind of evening that restores your faith in musicals.” And Entertainment Weekly says, “Grade A: the funniest musical of all time.” Jimmy Fallon of The Tonight Show calls it “Genius. Brilliant. Phenomenal.” It’s The Book of Mormon, the nine-time Tony Award-winning Best Musical.

This outrageous musical comedy follows the misadventures of a mismatched pair of missionaries, sent halfway across the world to spread the Good Word. Now with standing room only productions in London, on Broadway, and across North America, The Book of Mormon has truly become an international sensation. Contains explicit language.

Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra – Let’s Get It (1929)

Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra – Let’s Get It (1929)
