Kansas City Man Blues – Stumptown Jazz 2001

Kansas City Man Blues – Stumptown Jazz 2001

Kansas City Man Blues – Stumptown Jazz 2001

This blues was probably the first recording by the great Sidney Bechet with the Clarence Williams Blue Five in New York on July 30th 1923. If interested listen to it at http://ift.tt/2s2FX6y
I’ve always been interested in this tune and I’m glad I could introduce it to Stumptown Jazz shortly after I joined them in 1997.
We were taped while performing at a Milwaukee Jazz Society jazz concert in January 2001. We had grown to play it in a somewhat faster tempo. By just listening to the original recording again made me think that somewhere the beauty laid in this marvelous slow tempo. Next time we play it again, I’ll step it in ( that’s what we call that) at that slow speed. Who knows.
The band plays still once in a while together. Next time is at the Milwaukie Club again on May 10th 2007
In the band are Bob Erwig cornet, Phil Hatton clarinet, Rex Rice trombone, leader Gary Peterson piano, Dave Brown banjo, John Walling tuba and Bill Franklin drums.
