Okkervil River – Kansas City

Okkervil River – Kansas City

From Don’t Fall in Love With Everyone You See

Lyrics:
Well the river is deep and the river is wide, and the girl that I love is on the other side. She wants to move to Kansas city, move to Kansas city ‘Move, pretty baby, where the sky is so blue.’

She’s walking down Ellum, turning down Main, trying to find someone to sell her cocaine. She wants to move to Kansas city, move to Kansas city ‘Move, pretty baby, where the sky is so blue.’

With a dayful of promises dead on her lips, Mark 15:34 tucked next to her hip, she wants to move to Kansas city, move to Kansas city ‘Move, pretty baby, where the sky is so blue.’

Well I jumped in the water and started to drown. I thought of her walking and turned back around. I want to move to Kansas city, move to Kansas, I wanna pretty baby where the sky is so blue.

With her pair of old wings that opened just once, she can walk on two feet now, she can go where she wants. She can even move to Kansas city, move to Kansas city move pretty baby where the sky is so blue.

And I’ll tell you one thing that you should never do – never let a woman tell you she loves you. Sure she’ll call you ‘baby’ she’ll look you in your eye, gonna get on that airplane and wave ‘bye bye bye bye bye bye, bye bye baby.’,’baby bye bye, bye bye baby.’
So long this time, so long this time.

And if I could believe what I want to believe, I’d hold you all close and take you with me, all of you to Kansas city, you to Kansas city, we, yeah, where the sky is so blue.

Kansas City Shuffle – Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra

Kansas City Shuffle – Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra

Recorded on December 13, 1926. Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra was the most sucessful Jazz band of the Midwest. The band toured all over the country and had a top selling recording in 1927 for Victor named “South”. In 1929 Count Basie of The Blue Devils joined the band, and several other members of that band soon joined Moten’s Orchestra. Count Basie took over the band after Moten’s death in 1935.

JPT Scare Band – Acid Blues Is The White Man’s Burden – (Kansas City,U.S.A.)

JPT Scare Band – Acid Blues Is The White Man’s Burden – (Kansas City,U.S.A.)

From RYM:
“Over the last decade or so there seems to have been so many obscure and out-of-print albums from the seventies and almost each individual release has been touted as an undiscovered gem etc.. etc.. With so many of the releases of late, it would be easy to assume that the well is drying up and each new find should be met with extreme caution. For the most part the assumptions are unwarranted as there is still a fairly large amount of these type of releases that deserve a second life.

Enter this new archive release from JPT SCARE BAND, a group that could have been massive had their cards been dealt a little differently and as far as cult acts from the seventies go, these guys have to be just about the most respected and heralded group to have never had any commercial success. ACID BLUES is actually the seventh archive release from the band since 1994, and across various labels really have released some unearthed masterpieces. JPT recently signed a deal with upstart indie label RIPPLE MUSIC and this is the labels first release, and what a way to start.

Album opener LONG DAY is the most accessible song of the collection and even though is runs into the seven minute running time, it is still about as stock standard as the band have ever sounded. It’s an interesting tune that gives way to the more Psych stuff that fills the rest of the disc. NOT MY FAULT is slower paced blues-tinged number that is custom made for some mellow chill time if you know what I mean. DEATH LETTER 2001 is more along the lines of hat you would usually hear from JPT and fuses a few different elements into a very spooky sounding tune. STONE HOUSE BLUES is a ten minute jam fest will make fans of CREAM and JIMI HENDRIX reminisce about the good old days of the power trio jam band. I”VE BEEN WAITING is a much heavier song that compares to early day BLACK SABBATH due to its pure intensity and downtrodden backbone. ACID BLUES IS THE WHITE MAN’S BURDEN is a much more straightforward blues track that still wins points for a great jam-out about half way through the song. Closing track AMY’S BLUE DAY is another great improv-type blues jam that really showcases what a talent this group was back in the day.

For those of you into the psych-blues of guys like HENDRIX and CLAPTON, this new archive release of never before heard versions will certainly be enough to please you. Even thought JPT keep finding more and more stuff from the vault, it would seem that the well hasn’t dried up yet and hopefully RIPPLE MUSIC can get busy creating the bands next compilation. The album comes in high-quality digipak with a great informative booklet, but you can also get a double vinyl version that features an extra two bonus tracks.

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical — Kansas City Commercial

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical — Kansas City Commercial

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical is coming to the Music Hall in Kansas City, March 28 – April 2. Get tickets and more info: http://ift.tt/2qkBRFU

Long before she was Carole King, chart-topping music legend, she was Carol Klein, Brooklyn girl with passion and chutzpah. She fought her way into the record business as a teenager and, by the time she reached her twenties, had the husband of her dreams and a flourishing career writing hits for the biggest acts in rock ‘n’ roll. But it wasn’t until her personal life began to crack that she finally managed to find her true voice.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she made more than beautiful music, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

Kansas City Jammers – Sing me that Rock and Roll

Kansas City Jammers – Sing me that Rock and Roll

Fan Quote: “The band members first began performing together in 1969, while students at Ohio Wesleyan University. Upon Bob and Geoff’s graduation in 1971, they were able to devote themselves to full-time writing, recording, and playing on the local and regional scene. Jasey was a college senior at that time, and married to Syd, whose picture appears on the LP jacket. This album was recorded in late 1971 and early 1972. As you will hear, the band members were heavily influenced by the big British Invasion bands as well as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and the Eagles. The Jammers’ soaring harmonies and intricate lyrics were the result of these influences on the trio. As live performers, the Jammers were known for giving incandescent shows with a rough edge (think Stones and the Who) rather different from what is captured on their album. A play list of covers interspersed with their own very original music was often compiled in an idiosyncratic way in order to fit the perceived needs of the audience for whom they were performing. The Jammers’ ability to “read” the audience and to play with passion insured that everyone present had a good time. One audience member was heard to say, “When I feel down, I want to come hear you guys play because you are always so upbeat.” What more could a band want to hear? A second Kansas City Jammers LP was recorded during the summer of 1972, followed by the single ‘Give Me That Rock and Roll’ in 1973; the single made it to number twenty on WCOL radio’s playlist. Today, the band members have moved on to new careers, but still write and perform with other musicians. Bob has been practicing medicine for thirty years, and has a son and a daughter. He has laid down his drumsticks in favor of the guitar, and plays with an ensemble. Jasey has taught high school English for thirty-five years, and is the father of one son and three daughters. He co-wrote a hit song that was made famous by Eddie Rabbit in the 1980’s. He performs with his wife and other local musicians in Ohio. Geoff is now a professor of social work and the father of two daughters. He is still writing songs but not performing, and is also the author of numerous books.”

Kansas City Jazz History

Kansas City’s jazz history roots run deep. Kansas City’s jazz scene began in the 1920′s, but really took off during 1930′s prohibition. During that era, the city was mostly run by Tom Pendergast, the Democratic Boss of Jackson County. Under Pendergast, the city was an economic oasis in the heart of the country, a mecca for musicians searching for work. It was the wildest city in America at the time, filled with brothels, bars gambling dens, and party bands in Kansas City and the surrounding area.

Prohibition simply never existed in this city. Notorious mobsters like Pretty boy Floyd, and Baby Face Nelson roamed without worry in its nightclubs. Johnny Lanzia, Pendergast’s silent ally-“the Al Capone of Kansas City-” screened all potential candidates for the police force for any who seemed above reproach. Policemen could be seen all day rolling dice alongside civilian customers in the gambling businesses that lined 12th street.

The musicians who came to be identified with the Kansas City jazz style came from everywhere, to work and revel in the freedom that the city afforded. Bill “Count” Basie came from Red Bank, New Jersey. Mary Lou Williams was born in Georgia and raised in Pittsburg. Jay McShann came from Muskogee, Oklahoma. What they had in common was a distinctly southwestern way of dealing with the blues.

Kansas City jazz featured an irresistible joyous beat, syncopated conversations between the reed and brass sections that recalled the old call and response of the Sanctified Church, and an abiding fondness for the saxophone. Different from much of the other commercial swing at the time, this jazz was built mostly from head arrangements. Musical ideas or riffs were rarely written down, but provided the foundation for jazz musicians to improvise over.

Competition between KC musicians ran very deep. Claude “Fiddler” Williams recalled, “For some reason, this city was different from all the other cities because we’d jam all night. If you come up here and played the wrong thing, we’d straighten you out.” “Regardless of how much anybody played or where they were from, when they came here they found out how little they were playing,”said Mary Lou Williams. Trumpet player Buck Clayton compared KC musicians to gunfighters. He recalled that Lips Page used to slip notes under the hotel-room door of visiting trumpet players that said, “Meet me tonight at such-and-such a club.”

The Pendergast political machine collapsed after Tom Pendergast was indicted on tax evasion, reform elements took over and cabarets and nightclubs shut down. Jobs for musicians eventually dried up and the bands took to the road. By 1942, with the advent of World War II, many of the musicians had been drafted into the military. Finally, by 1944, the great Kansas City jazz era had slowed down, but it didn’t totally die out. Jazz still thrives in the city today.

Dr. Nielsen Band – Your Man – Øvelokalet Kansas City 2017

Lyrics:

I close my eyes only for a moment, and the moment’s gone
All my dreams pass before my eyes, a curiosity

Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind

Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind

Now, don’t hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, and all your money won’t another minute buy

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind (all we are is dust in the wind)
Dust in the wind (everything is dust in the wind), everything is dust in the wind (the wind)

Kansas City Southern

written by Gene Clark

E
When I was a young boy evening sun went down

Stand off by the railroad tracks and I’d listen for the sound
A E
Of that Kansas City Southern man that’a a lonesome sound
B
Well I’d sit and watch those trains go by
A * E
And wish that I was outward bound

E
Well I’d dream about big cities

And the pleasures I would keep

Long about twelve-thirty thru the phases of my sleep
A E
I’d hear that Kansas City Southern, man that’a a lonesome sound
B
Well I’d sit and watch those trains go by
A * E
And wish that I was outward bound

E
Well now I’ve been in a couple of places

Seen a couple of things

Whenever I think back in time

My memory forth rings
A E
With that Kansas City Southern, man that’a a lonesome sound
B
Well I’d sit and watch those trains go by
A * E
And wish that I was homeward bound

.: Yellow Brick Road band :: “Superstitious” :: Kansas City :.

.: Yellow Brick Road band :: “Superstitious” :: Kansas City :.

Remember the 1970’s? You couldn’t explore the clubs in Kansas City – or anywhere in the Midwest or even LA for that matter – without bumping into Yellow Brick Road. YBR mixed it up like nobody’s business – and while they may not have been everybody’s cup of tea, there was simply no argument that they covered a wide range of styles – pop, rock, jazz, funk, show tunes, vocal novelty pieces – like there was no tomorrow. Alan Manning surrounded himself with only the best – from his stagemates to his keyboards – and everyone came for a free lesson in How It’s Done. Here, the resurrected YBR Rewind band plays a rousing, rambling “Superstitious” with Brion Leftwich plonking the bass, Andy Hambleton beating the hydraulic skins, and the incomparably entertaining Terry Swope reinventing the guitar fretboard. It was a great night – sorry you missed it!

A Beneficial Guide when Reserving a Wedding Band in Kansas City Missouri

A Beneficial Guide when Reserving a Wedding Band

Are you intending to get a band for your wedding day? Do you know what factors to take into account when booking a band? Don’t worry, we are right here to help you in making a decision. There are many areas to consider when you are booking wedding amusement. Whatever kind of amusement you will appoint, you must make sure that it will make the wedding a celebration you and your guests won't forget.

Undoubtedly, one of the most important areas of a wedding is music. That is why you must conduct Kansas City bands booking mindfully. It is better to begin early at least 6 months prior to the wedding day. Another thing to consider in selecting a band is your wedding environment. If you want the top recommendation, you must have it through word of mouth. You can get good suggestions from your friends and family. Even event planners, wedding directors, and florists are dependable sources.

This post features the guidelines for Kansas City bands booking.

Fit With Your Wedding Theme

One of the most popular wedding styles today are classic and summer. When you are booking a wedding band in Kansas City for your wedding day it is better to keep in mind the theme. The band you will pick should be able to keep your desired motif highlighted in the occasion. For instance, to augment your classic motif, you can have a band that plays 1920’s tunes together with some flapper dancers.

Play the Music at the Right Time

Everybody is aware of the point that weddings usually do not run to time. That is why being realistic is important with regards to the scheduling of the band. You can coordinate with the venue administrator to attain the best results. Having amusement during drinks is a great time. With a band performing, your guests will be able to listen to good music while experiencing the food.

Have Sufficient Space

Another word of advice associated with Kansas City bands booking is available space. When you are reserving a band you must consider the band size, venue space, and funds. It is important that the space of the venue will be able to accommodate the band, especially if it is a huge one.

If you have small dance floor and stage, the band might get a problem adjusting. If the event site is commodious, you have to make sure that the sound can be heard from the other side of the hall. It is crucial to take these things into consideration since they are key elements to an unforgettable occasion.

Refreshments

You need to boost the energy level of your band by providing them a few refreshments. This will result in better performance by the band. The band may be tired from long hours of travel to reach your place and setting up the stage. To return the favour, you can offer them an area to chill along with some drinks. This will ensure that your band will put on a show during the occasion and make it noteworthy.

Terms and Conditions

When you reserve a band, expect to have a contract with them. You need to check the stipulations of the contract meticulously. You must read the cancellation terms and conditions precisely too.

This just shows that being cautious when Kansas City bands booking is important. It can either spoil your day or make it the very best.

Points to consider before Choosing a Wedding Live Band in Kansas City

Points to consider before Choosing a Wedding Live Band

The day you've dreamt all your live is soon going to be a reality. The day of your wedding is coming closer and it's stressful. You've sent all invitations, set the date and reserved the venue for the wedding reception. You also have come up with a choice of wedding dress and cake.

To find the best band which will make your day special, read the following steps.

Their Website and the Way they Advertise it

The band’s website is among the things you must take into account. It's not is easy to find good as well as professional bands in Kansas City. Your friends might recommend you a particular band. Nonetheless, you cannot automatically tell that you'll like the band too.

You should ensure that the live band you will decide on has a webpage. You should then check if the site contains pictures and details of the recent weddings they serve as well as videos or demos. These aspects will help you decide whether the band is great or not for consideration.

In case the band doesn't have a presence online, you must not think about the band. The reason is that they don't see themselves as a real product. They don't make necessary investments in their band. How do you expect them to make your big day so unique?

Working Regularly

An expert band would be willing to show you their calendar. How do you know whether they are good or not? You'll know if the band is in demand if they have a full calendar. An easy way to find if the band is good or not is to check whether a club is booking a band or not. In case the club books a band regular, they have to be good. For that reason, checking the calendar of a Kansas City wedding band is a superb technique to end up with the best one.

See and Meet with the Manager

Before you decide to book a live wedding band in Kansas City, you should make sure to see their live performance first somewhere. You should understand they play a set list of songs for the club. This will give you an idea how they entertain their audience.
